Our family is hoping to travel to Latvia in the summer of 2011. While we will fund our own way there, we are fundraising for supplies and food to provide for the children of Latvia while we are there:
-sporting equipment
-fresh fruit
-shoes
-arts and craft activities
-dental hygiene education
-English instruction

Unemployment in Latvia is reported at 23%, but may be higher. At the height of the Great Depression in the US unemployment was 25%.
There are thousands of orphans living in orphanages, and countless more living in substandard conditions.
Situated in Eastern Europe on the Baltic Sea, Latvia borders on Estonia, Lithuania, Russia and Belarus. - First proclaimed independence in 1919, was forced into the Soviet Union in 1940, reclaimed independence in 1991.
- Ethnic groups - 58% Latvian, the remainder mainly Russians, Belarussians and Ukrainians
- Language - Latvian is the main and official language. Russian is the second most used.
- Population - approximately 2.3 million
- Riga, is the capital with a population of approximately 735,000.
